Most headaches fall into three categories: tension headache, migraine headache, or cluster headache. All three of them require different treatment plans, so if you are suffering from headache pain the first step is determining which headache type you fall into. Below you will information on each headache and the treatment involved in each.

Tension Headache

Symptoms of a tension headache generally consist of a dull ache on both sides of the head. You may also feel a tight band across the front of your head. Tension headaches are the most common type of headache and can generally be treated with aspirin, acetaminophen, or NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and naproxen.

Migraine Headache

A migraine headache will produce moderate to severe pounding or throbbing pain, and most commonly this pain only occurs to one side of the head. Sensitivity to light or sounds, dizziness, vomiting and nausea are also associated symptoms of a migraine headache. Treatments can range from lifestyle changes, NSAIDs, beta blockers, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, oral triptan, and more. The treatment of migraine headaches will vary from person to person, and a pain management specialist should be consulted in the treatment process.

Cluster Headache

A cluster headache is the least common of these headache types, and is most common in men. If you are suffering an excruciating, sharp, knife-like pain around one eye then you are most likely experiencing a cluster headache. These can occur daily in clusters of weeks or month, and then disappear for months or years. Some treatment options involve triptan nasal sprays, high flow oxygen therapy, sumatriptan injections, and other preventative measures.
