Dr. Patrick Joyner Honored with “Excellence in Teaching Award” from the Arthroscopy Association of North America

NAPLES, FL (June 1, 2022) – Dr. Patrick Joyner, a board-certified Orthopaedic Sports Medicine physician at Naples-based OrthoCollier, a division of Neuroscience & Spine Associates, received the 2022 Stephen J. Snyder, M.D. Excellence in Teaching Award from the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA). Dr. Joyner was honored during an award ceremony at the AANA’s annual meeting in San Francisco on May 19-21, 2022. The award is granted to an AANA Education Instructor for demonstrating exceptional dedication and skill as a teacher.

Dr. Joyner, who was a U.S.A. Olympic team doctor volunteer during the 2020 Youth Olympic Winter Games in Lausanne, Switzerland, is a member of the AANA’s volunteer faculty and teaches masters level courses on knee and shoulder arthroscopy cartilage preservation and meniscal preservation to orthopedic surgeons at the AANA’s National Orthopedic Learning Center (OLC) in Chicago.

“I believe it’s critical to teach the next generation to ensure we continue to advance medicine and set the stage for improvements in medical care from generation to generation,” said Dr. Joyner, who once taught orthopedic surgery as an academic Naval officer, and eventually became the head physician for Seal Teams 2 and 4, and the military’s international sports competition team medical doctor. “I’m very humbled by this recognition. I love to teach. I love to foster education. Every time I teach, I learn more than I give, and I walk away a better doctor.”

The AANA Excellence in Teaching Award is given to one instructor each year and includes a monetary gift that Dr. Joyner has already delegated as a donation to the OLC Foundation, which helps to fund programs and travel for physicians and residents that may not be able to afford the advanced training classes at the center. Dr. Joyner began teaching specialized orthopedic surgery at the center while in the Navy and has returned to volunteer at the center each year since.

“This honor is very special to me because faculty is by invitation and the caliber of surgeons at the center are very well respected and travel from the nation’s top teaching institutions like Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, Duke, and Harvard,” said Dr. Joyner, who is also the head of orthopedic education at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Myers. At his OrthoCollier office in Naples, he mentors resident physicians and students studying to be physician each year. After hours, Dr. Joyner volunteers as an assistant wrestling coach at Naples High School and as an on-site physician at many Barron Collier, Immokalee, and Palmetto Ridge high school football and baseball games.

Dr. Patrick Joyner practices sports medicine and is an orthopedic surgeon at OrthoCollier, a division of Neuroscience & Spine Associates. His office is located at 1250 Pine Ridge Road. Appointments to see Dr. Joyner can be made by calling (239) 325-1135. For more information, visit orthocollier.com.
