What are PRP Injections? | NASA MRI Blog

It is thought that PRP injections have proven effective in the treatment of injuries to tendons, muscles, joints, and ligaments. Athletes have found success with the use of PRP, and some have even reported a faster recovery time. But what exactly are PRP injections?

Platelet-Rich-Plasma (PRP)

PRP stands for Platelet-Rich-Plasma. Our blood is made up of plasma, red and white bloods cells, and platelets. Within platelets are proteins that assists in the healing of injuries. Platelet-Rich-Plasma is simply blood that has a higher percentage of platelets.

How is platelet-rich-plasma collected?

The first step to the collection of PRP is drawing the patient’s blood. Once drawn, the blood undergoes the centrifugation process. This separates the platelets from the red and white cells, and the plasma in the blood. The platelets are then collected and added back to the plasma. This creates a high percentage a platelets in the blood.

What happens during the PRP Injection procedure?

After your blood is drawn and the PRP is created, it is then injected at the site of the injury. Ultrasound machines are often used to accurately discover the injection location.

What injuries can be treated with PRP Injections?

PRP treatment methods are still being researched, but do show promise, especially with tendon injuries.

• Tendon Injuries
• Tennis Elbow
• Achilles Tendonitis
• Pulled Hamstring Muscles
• Knee Sprains
