Did you know that what you think is just simple back pain may actually be a spinal compression fracture?

Most spinal fractures are vertebral compression fractures. These types of fractures do not heal on their own. Untreated, these fractures will begin to cause serious health problems. The first sign that you have suffered a vertebral compression fracture is often simple back pain. The pain can range from manageable to acute, and will not gradually go away.

As a matter of fact, vertebral compression fractures are often misdiagnosed as basic back pain. Left untreated, back pain due to a compression fracture will continue to become worse. The type of back pain that can be symptomatic of a compression fracture may include the following:

• Pain when bending down
• Loss of spinal height
• Reduced range of motion
• Sudden and severe back pain

Decreased lung capacity and trouble sleeping can also be symptoms of an untreated vertebral compression fracture.

How to tell if your back pain is caused by a spinal compression fracture

In determining the cause of your back pain expect your physician to enquire about the following:

  • Where the pain is located
  • When the pain started
  • If the pain was gradual or sudden
  • The intensity of the pain
  • If there are certain activities or movements that make the pain increase or stop
  • Whether the pain radiates to other parts of the body

If your physician suspects a fracture he or she may then begin with an X-ray to discover more. Additional tests will likely be required. For example, in treating vertebral compression fractures in Naples we require our patients to undergo an MRI scan to learn more about the cause and age of the fracture, as well as the condition of nerves surrounding the area.
