Avoiding Migraines During the Holiday Season

Avoiding Migraines During the Holiday Season | NASA MRI Blog

The holiday season is upon us, and Christmas is fast approaching. Unfortunately, for those who suffer from migraines, the holiday season can be difficult. Stress, changes in schedule, and the desire to nap in front of the Christmas tree can often trigger migraines. Keep the below in mind to help you enjoy a migraine-free holiday.

Get the correct amount of sleep

After waking up early on Christmas morning and enjoying a delicious and filling meal, you may be tempted to take an afternoon nap, or head to bed early. Remember that changes in your sleep pattern can induce a migraine.

Avoid trigger foods

Common migraine trigger foods that pop up around Christmastime include chocolate, aged cheeses, smoked meats, and dried fruits (a great reason to pass on Grandma’s fruit cake!).

Hydrate – and that spiked eggnog doesn’t count!

Dehydration often leads to a migraine, and the temptation to choose a delicious holiday drink over water looms heavy at Christmas. Moderation and balance are the key. Don’t overindulge! Not sure how much water you need to drink? As a general rule, it is suggested that for each pound you weigh you should drink 1/2 to 1 ounce of water.

Don’t Let Stress Win

The most grinch-like of all migraine triggers. Stress is often a major factor when it comes to migraines, and can be the hardest to keep under control. You know yourself the best, don’t enter a situation that will increase your stress level. Hosting Christmas dinner at your home is a stress mine-field, ask another family member to host, just bring your signature Christmas dish!

All migraines are different, and you know your migraine triggers the best. Stick to your schedule, exercise, avoid overindulging and you are on the path to a migraine-free holiday.

If you are concerned about the frequency or intensity of your headaches or migraines, speak with your primary physician about seeing a neurologist. Neurologists can help determine your exact type of headache and begin you on a treatment plan that can mean more time in the Naples sunshine.

Everyone at Neuroscience and Spine Associates wishes you and yours a Very Merry Holiday Season.
